Community Policing

The Ayden Police Department is very active in the Town of Ayden and has started several community policing programs. The Police Department has worked with the citizens to reduce the fear crime, and improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods.

The Community Policing Council is sponsored by the Ayden Police Department, and volunteers meet every third Tuesday of each month to plan programs, discuss issues in neighborhoods, and welcome special guests.

On August 6, 1998 the Ayden Police Department was presented with the Governor's Award for Excellence in Community Oriented Policing. Also, the Department has been a five year recipient of the OASIS award for excellence for the work done in the Ayden Schools.

Adopt a Neighborhood:

Within the community 20 zones exist with an officer representing each of these zones with in the Town.  Officers have worked with volunteers to develop active community watches.  Periodically, the neighborhood watches will hold meetings and social activities.

Adopt a Cop:

The Ayden Police Officers are currently adopting classrooms at Ayden Elementary School and Ayden Middle School.  Officers and students are going on field trips to the Police Station, having class discussions about gangs, drugs and other topics, and the Officers are eating lunch with the classes.

Truancy:

Truancy is a newly initiated program in the Police Department.  Officers are working with parents and the schools to identify teens that are not in school. Once the students are identified or spotted in the streets during school hours, they will be picked up by an officer and returned to school or to their parents.

Volunteers in Police Service:

Volunteers in Police Service are graduates of the Citizen's Police Academy, or interested citizens who volunteer in several different capacities in the Police Department.  Volunteers will be asked to volunteer in the substations, call citizens participating in the Elderly Watch program, and other tasks to help the Police Department.

Elderly Watch:

The Elderly Watch program is available free of charge to members of the community who do not have any family or friends to check up on them.  All that is required is a phone, and the night telecommunicator or a volunteer will call the citizens who sign up twice a week to make sure they are doing well.

Citizens' Police Academy:

The Citizens' Police Academy was created by former Town of Ayden Police Chief Roger Paul in 1994.  This program is designed to help the citizens of Ayden understand the duties and responsibilities of the Ayden Police Department.  The course last six weeks, and is usually held in late July and into August.

Christmas Programs:

The Police Department offers two different holiday programs.  Shop with a Cop has been running for several years.  Ayden Elementary and Middle Schools recommend students in need to go out shopping several days before Christmas.  Adult volunteers take identified students to Walmart and Toys "R" Us for a day of Christmas shopping.

National Night Out:

National Night Out is held every year of August 1st.  Neighborhood watches gather in each area of Town to celebrate against crime.  Last year six block parties were held with a large community block party held at Town Hall.

Halloween Safe Night Out:

Annually the Police Department and the Ayden Community Policing Council celebrate Halloween at Town Hall.  Children from the community and the Boys & Girls Club come to West Avenue for games, prizes, information on staying safe, and a costume contest.

For more information on any of these programs or to sign up, call the Police Department at (252) 746-7015.
