Stormwater is untreated water from
rainfall or snow that does not soak into the ground.
Instead it flows through storm drains or ditches picking
up pollutants along the way and empties these pollutants
into streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and coastal areas.
Some examples of pollutants are soap, fertilizer, eroded
dirt, pet waste, chemicals and sometimes human waste.
Stormwater is a
problem because it not only affects wildlife, but it
affects humans. The pollutants carried by stormwater
can enter our drinking water or into a body of water
such as the ocean, thus creating economic problems, as
well as health problems. |
